"WHISTLER IS NO JOKE"

March 2001 Greyhound Review

by Vera Filipelli

Craigie Whistler was born on April Fool's Day in 1998, but his victory in the $85,000 Derby Lane Sprint Classic proved that he's not a practical joke.

He won his Maiden at Gulf Greyhound Park in November 1999 in 30.09 seconds, the second fastest Maiden winning time ever at the track.  The Whistler went from Maiden to winning in stakes competition with 10 straight victories, the last two wins in stakes competition.

On February 12, 2000, at the tender age of 22 months, he was the beaten favorite in the $85,000 Derby Lane Sprint Classic in only his 13th lifetime start.

Craigie Whistler came back to redeem himself against eventual winner, Greys Starquest, only five races later in a hot box race besting the champion in a blazing fast time of 30.39 (only two lengths of a second off the track record).

After an intentional and effective six months layoff in Abilene, Ks., under the watchful eye of studmaster Kevin Dalton to do some work in the breeding barn, Whistler returned to the oldest Greyhound track in the country to take aim on competitors in the 2001 $85,000 Classic.

Against the likes of three time stake winner, Dominator, Iowa Cup champ, BD's Phillip, and race favorite, Courageous Nicky, Whistler did not disappoint his owner, Amy Birnbaum of New York.  Whistler went box to wire running the race in an extremely fast time of 30.47 seconds, just one hundreth of a second off the fastest time of the meet.

"Trainer Norman Secia's strategy of resting Whistler for almost half a year really paid off as he peaked at just the right time," said Larry Birnbaum, co-owner of the C&C Kennel with Coy "Buddy" Scitern.  Scitern and Birnbaum watched the race via satellite on the Greyhound Channel.

Craigie Whistler (Molotov-Oshkosh Twist) was purchased at the NGA Fall Auction in 1999 for $25,500.

"We hope that he will also have a promising stud career," Birnbaum added.  His pedigree is immaculate out of three-time track record holder, Molotov, and Bill Pollard's best stock on his bitch side.  With a career record of 33 starts (Gulf and St. Pete) he has 20 wins, 8 seconds, 2 thirds and 1 fourth.  Whistler's mother must sure
